Waterford Royal Visit, King And Queen On Grand Stand Steps

Waterford Royal visit, King and Queen on Grand Stand steps

The King and Queen during a visit to Irelands oldest city, Waterford, way back when! I suspect that this is connected to the Poole photographs from Kilkenny Castle and this was for the press? I was caught by the shape of the object to the right rear of the steps! At first I thought it was a camera from a very bad POV but it now looks like a ladies hat thanks to the wonderful megazoom. And so it was confirmed (thanks to Niall McAuley, sharon.corbet, and beachcomberaustralia) that this image almost certainly dates to a royal visit to the South East in May 1904. However, this likely isn't Waterford City proper, but an outing to a jumping competition in Tramore's St Patricks Park, at the Waterford Agricultural Society show. What we are likely witnessing here is the departure of Edward and Alexandra - having perhaps just knighted the Mayor of Waterford. At 4pm they took the train to visit Lismore Castle.
