The Moeraki Boulders

The Moeraki Boulders are geological marvels, exposed by erosion of sedimentary rocks laid down from 65 to 13 million years ago. They are formed by the gradual precipitation of calcite in mudstone over 4 million years. These spherical concretions are internationally significant for their scientific value and are a popular tourist attraction. Location Moeraki is on the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. 35 km south of Oamaru, and 80 km north of Dunedin.

MV Tuhoe

The MV Tuhoe is an historic schooner that was built in 1919 and is now stationed on the Kaiapoi River wharf. This ship was secured in 2004 by the M V Tuhoe Kaiapoi Rivertown Trust to ensure this river icon remained in the town. During the season from October until June the following year the ship regularly sails the Kaiapoi and Waimakariri rivers. The ship is operated by a valued team of volunteers who willingly give their time to ensure that whoever sails on it has a most enjoyable experience. Departing from the Kaiapoi Wharf, you will cruise the lower Kaiapoi and Waimakariri Rivers for a relaxing and peaceful hour. Along your journey you may see lots of river activities including fishermen, trampers on the walkway, some bird life, stunning landscape scenes from the mountains of the Southern Alps to Banks Peninsula and also Pegasus Bay.

Green vegetable bug.

This pest, is also known in some countries as the green vegetable bug. It occurs throughout the Americas, in various Pacific Islands, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa. First seen in Hawaii in 1961 on Oahu, it has spread to all major islands. The bugs feed by piercing plant tissue with needle-like stylets. The actual feeding puncture is not immediately visible. Adults and nearly all nymphal stages (2nd to 5th nymphal stages) feed on a variety of plant tissue. Succulent parts of the plant and the developing flowers or fruit are preferred. Feeding injury becomes visible sometime after actual feeding. Feeding on flower buds results in premature abscission. Feeding injury on leguminous pods results in seed damage and ultimately distorted development of the pods. Nymphal and adult feeding on macadamia nuts often results in spotting or pitting of the kernels and premature abscission. Soft and spongy tissue under otherwise intact epidermis results when the stink bug feeds on vegetable tissue.

Gymnopilus

This impressive mushroom is found growing in dense clusters on stumps and logs of both hardwoods and conifers--and a number of associated species names are found growing in a dense cluster, as well. These species (if they are truly distinct), are all fairly large mushrooms that have orange to orangish brown spore prints, bitter taste, and stems that feature rings or ring zones. The central species name is Gymnopilus junonius, which is the correct name for "Gymnopilus spectabilis," according to the most recent taxonomists.
