a greater joy to children than all the expensively garnished shop-windows

London, 1920s Photogravure by Donald Macleish from Wonderful London by St John Adcock, 1927. From the section entitled Some of the sights and sounds that liven London streets: Curb-side hawkers are to be found wherever shoppers congregate, but Holborn at Christmas is a favourite pitch of theirs. With their nodding-dolls and acrobatic toys - mechanisms that never appear to function so deftly after purchase - they are often a greater joy to children than all the expensively garnished shop-windows on the other side of the pavement.
