European thimbleweed (anemone nemorosa), growing in early spring, dying back to the rhizoms by mid-summer, when the leaves of the trees reduces sunlight. The rhizoms grows below the surface and produces large carpet areas in woodlands. The plant is poisonous to humans (protoanemonin) and is used in medicine.
