It is the most southerly of the islands in the Pentland Firth between the Orkney Islands and Caithness, the northeasternmost part of the mainland. Stroma is part of the county of Caithness. The name is from the Old Norse Straumr-Ã¸y meaning "island in the [tidal] stream". Ancient stone structures testify to the presence of Stroma's earliest residents, while a Norse presence around 900â€“1,000 years ago is recorded in the Orkneyinga Saga. It has been politically united with Caithness since at least the 15th century. Although Stroma lies only a few miles off the Scottish coast, the savage weather and ferociously strong tides of the Pentland Firth meant that the island's inhabitants were very isolated, causing them to be largely self-sufficient, trading agricultural produce and fish with the mainlanders. Most of the islanders were fishermen and crofters; some also worked as maritime pilots to guide vessels through the treacherous waters of the Pentland Firth. The tides and currents meant that shipwrecks were frequentâ€”the most recent occurring in 1993â€”and salvage provided an additional though often illegal supplement to the islanders' incomes. A lighthouse was built on Stroma in 1890 and still operates under automation. Stroma is now abandoned, with the houses of its former inhabitants unoccupied

Keiss Castle

Keiss Castle is a partially ruined castle in Scotland, which stands on sheer cliffs overlooking Sinclair's Bay less than one mile north of Keiss village centre, Caithness, Highland, Scotland. It is protected as a scheduled monument. The old castle was replaced by Keiss House around 1755. The castle was constructed as a Z-plan tower house with 4 floors plus an attic and a vaulted basement. It had a pair of corner towers at opposite angles of a square central block, the main tower is very narrow for its height with the tall chimney stack. The castle was built possibly on the site of an earlier fort in the late 16th or early 17th century by George Sinclair, 5th Earl of Caithness (1582-1643). It seems the castle was in existence in 1623 when James I commissioned Sir Robert Gordon to enter Caithness with an armed force. The 7th Earl died in the castle in 1698 but it is reported that the castle was ruinous in 1700 and 1726 as being in repair with 'at the side of it a convenient house lately built'. The estate was purchased by Sir William Sinclair, 2nd Baronet of Dunbeath early in the 18th century and in 1752 Keiss became his family seat. The current house was built about 1755 but had to be sold in 1765 because of financial difficulties to the Sinclairs of nearby Ulbster. Staxigoe is a former fishing village, located 2 miles east of Wick on the north-eastern coast of the former county of Caithness, Scottish Highlands and is in the Scottish council area of Highland. Its name derives from Norse, "the inlet of the stack". It was once the largest herring salting station in Europe, but its fishing industry went into decline with the construction of a larger port in central Wick. The name comes from two Norse words - "GJA" or "GOE" meaning an inlet, and "STAKKR" meaning a rock or stack, hence "Staxigoe", the inlet of the stack. At the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, a few unscrupulous landlords began evicting tenants from land which had been theirs since the times of the clan system. Sheep had arrived in the Highlands, and the "Highland Clearances" began. Men were sent to war out of loyalty to their chief, and those who returned found their homes and crofts burned and their families scattered to the four corners of the earth. Those who were left - women, children, and the old people - had to walk the 100 miles or more from the hills and straths of Sutherland to the bleak and barren coasts to try to find settlements and a means of living. Each room had box-beds, these were often closed in by folding doors or curtains. Wooden boards were covered with a layer of straw and a chaff filled mattress, both were renewed every year. The pillows were stuffed with the feathers of the croft chickens which were killed, plucked then eaten (little went to waste), blankets made of sheep's fleece were made at the mill; together this made a very cosy bed. Noss Head Stacks

Noss Head Stacks, by Sinclair Gimgoe Castle,Caithness, Scotland, UK. The Noss Head Stacks are on the North East Coast of Caithness. The route is now along the coastal cliffs once more, passing the back of two deep geos before reaching a track, and turning right along this to reach the ruins of Castle Sinclair Girnigoe. The castle is perched on a small sandstone stack between two geos; it has been undergoing restoration on and off for some years, and you may or may not be able to go inside across the drawbridge. There are excellent views of the castle from the path which can be followed a little way further along the coast to view more sea stacks and the castle. Return along the castle access track, following this back to the Noss Head road and then turn right to head inland. This minor road goes through flat farmland, and passes some cottages and then the entrance to Noss Farm on the right. At the crossroads with Wick airport straight ahead, turn left. Follow the road until a sharp left bend brings you to the outskirts of Staxigoe. Follow this road through the houses to the harbour and the start point for the walk.

Home to over 100,000 seabirds in the summer, including internationally important populations of Guillemot, Razorbill and Great Skua. Small numbers of Puffin and Arctic Skua amongst other seabirds also nest. The island is also superb for botany and for spotting whales, dolphins, seals and the occasional otter. The scenery and geology is also fantastic.The reserve is owned by the Scourie Estate, and managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. There are few facilities on the island, just a small visitor shelter, composting toilet and shop. The reserve is reached by a ferry boat from Tarbet, near Scourie, and runs from April to September (Phone to check dates). The ferry runs on demand Monday - Saturday from 9.00am, with the last boat out to the island at 2pm. Returns available all day with the last one being at 5pm. Latheron is on the A9, Latheron Graveyard, Caithness, Scotland, UK Latheron (Scottish Gaelic: Latharan) is a small village and civil parish in Caithness, in the Highland Region of Scotland, centred on the junction of the A9 with the A99. Latheron Parish Churchyard is at Wheel, near the road from Latheron to Lybster. It has been extended to the East. The old parish church built in 1734 is now home to the Clan Gunn Museum opened in 1985. An 18th-century parish church, and a fragment of its predecessor, apparently occupying the site of a 13th-century church. Latheron was one of the churches reserved to the bishop in a charter of 1223 x 45, and in 1515 the vicar of Latheron is on record but intermediate references appear to be lacking. A new church was built about 1734, part of its predecessor being retained in the rear to serve as a burial place of the Sinclairs of Dunbeath. Known as 'The Aisle', this fragment presents no features of architectural interest, although a 17th-century monument with an effaced Latin inscription is built into the wall. No stones of interest are visible in the churchyard. A belfry was added to the church in 1822 in which the bell from the 17th-century bell tower (ND23SW 5) was installed.

Castletown Harbour

Castletown Harbour, Caithness, Scotland, UK. In a late day it was one of the ports of make slab, a lot of shipping went out this port take Caithness slab all over the World.And in 1820 work began on the construction of Castlehill Harbour, intended to allow the easy transport of flagstones from the local quarries to destinations throughout the British Isles and far beyond: Castlehill flagstone found use in places as far afield as South America and Australia. The first cargo of flagstones left Castlehill Harbour in April 1825: many more were to follow.
The workers in Traill's quarry and their families needed somewhere to live, and Traill established a planned village built to a grid pattern inland from Castlehill. This became Castletown and by 1825 was substantially complete. Traill also built Castletown Mill in 1818 to process corn from the surrounding area. Close by is the car park at the end of the beach footpath. This was opened in 2000 and gives access to the excellent beach and dune area to the north east. The 100 people employed in Castletown's flagstone industry in 1825 had increased to 500 by the peak year of 1902, when 35,363 tonnes of flag were produced, worth Â£23,239. But by the 1920s concrete paving stones had largely replaced the natural material and the industry died. Today's Castletown is a neat village built largely, as you would expect, from the local stone. Featuring a rocky coastline, its mouth is formed at Tongue Bay. The community of Tongue is situated on the Kyle's eastern shore and the loch is crossed by the Kyle of Tongue Bridge and Causeway. The sea loch and surrounding countryside are designated as the Kyle of Tongue National Scenic Area, one of the forty such areas in Scotland, which are defined to identify areas of exceptional scenery and to ensure its protection from inappropriate development. The designated area covers 24,488 ha in total, of which 21,093 ha is on land, with a further 3396 ha being marine (i.e. below low tide level), and takes in the nearby mountains of Ben Hope and Ben Loyal as well as several small islands and the coastline as far east as Bettyhill. According to the Origines Parochiales Scotiae, Castle Varrich, an old square tower on a hill on the east side of the Kyle, was the residence of Karl Hundason, who made an effort to conquer Scotland on the death of Malcolm II. There are three brochs: on Kyle's east side opposite Melness; at the head of the Kyle; and at Dunbuie, a hill on the west side of the Kyle.
