On the western flank of the San Francisco Peaks, Aspen Loop Trail is a moderate 2 mile loop trail descending through a beautiful forest of aspen, fir, and pine to meet the Arizona National Scenic Trail Passage 34. The trail offers views of the San Francisco Peaks, Kendrick Mountain, and hills to the west of the Peaks. The trail splits at around the half-mile mark. Studies by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Northern Arizona University scientists suggest that Red Mountain formed in eruptions about 740,000 years ago. Arizona Snowbowl Grand Canyon Express Ski Lift Opening Celebration

On December 10, 2016, the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort opened the new Grand Canyon Express ski lift. As part of the celebration, the resort offered free rides on the new lift to members of the public, served hot chocolate and s'mores, and lit a bonfire to keep revelers warm. Offering skiing and snowboarding on Arizona's highest mountain, the SnowBowl ski resort is a full service downhill ski area. Runs range from beginner to advanced, so there's opportunities for everyone to have fun. The resort offers rentals, lessons, and childcare. The Snowbowl usually opens in early December and remains open until mid-April. In summer months, the Arizona Snowbowl operates one of the lifts as a scenic ride. Humphreys Trail No. 51

San Francisco Peaks groundsel (packera franciscana) is a rare member of the aster family found only on the alpine tundra talus slopes of the San Fracisco Peaks. Off-trail hiking is prohibited above the treeline to protect the fragile habitat of this rare flower. View along Humphreys Trail No. 50. The trail starts at the Arizona Snowbowl and winds steeply up to Humphreys Peak, the highest point in Arizona at 12,633 feet. Humphreys Peak is one of several named peaks in the San Francisco Peaks (aka San Francisco Mountain or simply "the Peaks"). The mountain is an extinct stratovolcano. The 5+ mile hike ascends over an elevation gain of over 3,000 feet, and generally take 6 to 8 hours to complete. The trail starts by skirting the boundary of an outlying subdivision, and passes through the effects of the 800 acre La Barranca Fire. It then follows an old jeep trail to Jacks Canyon Tank where it drops into the drainage bottom and proceeds along its moderate climb by crisscrossing the dry streambed. As part of the celebration, the resort offered free rides on the new lift to members of the public, served hot chocolate and s'mores, and lit a bonfire to keep revelers warm. On the southwestern side of the San Francisco Peaks, Arizona Trail Passage 34 drops gently from the junction of Aspen Loop, heading north across the top of Hart Prarie. The trail skirts the edge of the Kachina Peaks Wilderness, instersecting Bismarck Lake Trail approximately 2 miles from Aspen Loop.
