28/09/2015. Salvage crews will meet for two hours to decide how they will recover the stranded MV Tuhoe on Tuesday. The 96-year-old ship was returning to its berth in the Kaiapoi River, after receiving more than $200,000 worth of repairs in Lyttelton, when it ran aground on a sandbar at the Waimakariri River mouth about 4pm Sunday. MV Tuhoe Kaiapoi Riverton Trust chairman Philip Redmond said a surveyor had examined the ship and deemed the risk too great to try and save it. Regional harbourmaster Jim Dilley said the ship's owners, insurance company, contractors and a salvage crew would meet with him at 8am on Tuesday to discuss how they could recover the damaged vessel. They would have a detailed plan by 10am. Dilley, who did not know how the ship fared overnight, said on Monday the waves were moving the boat's stern, causing a twisting effect with the potential to break it in half. 28/09/2015. MV Tuhoe

The MV Tuhoe is an historic schooner that was built in 1919 and is now stationed on the Kaiapoi River wharf. This ship was secured in 2004 by the M V Tuhoe Kaiapoi Rivertown Trust to ensure this river icon remained in the town. During the season from October until June the following year the ship regularly sails the Kaiapoi and Waimakariri rivers. The ship is operated by a valued team of volunteers who willingly give their time to ensure that whoever sails on it has a most enjoyable experience. Departing from the Kaiapoi Wharf, you will cruise the lower Kaiapoi and Waimakariri Rivers for a relaxing and peaceful hour. Along your journey you may see lots of river activities including fishermen, trampers on the walkway, some bird life, stunning landscape scenes from the mountains of the Southern Alps to Banks Peninsula and also Pegasus Bay.
