Tuatara.New Zealand.

They are the only surviving members of the order Sphenodontia, which was well represented by many species during the age of the dinosaurs, some 200 million years ago. All species exept for the tuatara declined and eventually became extinct about 60 million years ago. Tuatara are therefore of huge international interest to biologists. They are recognised internationally and within New Zealand as species in need of active conservation management. Indian Ringnecked Parrot. &x28;Psittacula krameri&x29

If not given sufficient attention, the Indian Ring Neck may become unfriendly and disobedient. In order to maintain their friendly personalities and tameness, regular handling and socialization are a must for these birds. The plumage of the Indian Ring Neck is apple green, although mutations in a range of other colors also exist. This includes buttercup yellow and the increasingly popular powder blue. The silvereye has a wide distribution throughout New Zealand. They can be found from sea level to above the tree line but they are not abundant in deep forest or open grassland. Slightly smaller than a sparrow, the silvereye is olive-green with a ring of white feathers around the eye. Males have slightly brighter plumage than females. They have a fine tapered bill and a brush tipped tongue like the tui and bellbird. Silvereyes mainly eat insects, fruit and nectar. The silvereye was first recorded in New Zealand in 1832 and since there is no evidence that it was artificially introduced, it is classified as a native species. Its Māori name, tauhou, means 'stranger' or more literally 'new arrival'. Soun. The silvereye has a wide distribution throughout New Zealand. White faced heron.

The white-faced heron is New Zealand's most common heron, despite being a relatively new arrival to this country. It is a tall, elegant, blue-grey bird that can be seen stalking its prey in almost any aquatic habitat, including damp pasture and playing fields. Because it occupies space also shared with people it is usually well habituated to their presence, and may allow close approach. Orchard Butterfly

Orchard Butterfly

Green vegetable bug.

This pest, is also known in some countries as the green vegetable bug. It occurs throughout the Americas, in various Pacific Islands, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa. First seen in Hawaii in 1961 on Oahu, it has spread to all major islands. The bugs feed by piercing plant tissue with needle-like stylets. The actual feeding puncture is not immediately visible. Adults and nearly all nymphal stages (2nd to 5th nymphal stages) feed on a variety of plant tissue. Succulent parts of the plant and the developing flowers or fruit are preferred. Feeding injury becomes visible sometime after actual feeding. Feeding on flower buds results in premature abscission. Feeding injury on leguminous pods results in seed damage and ultimately distorted development of the pods. Nymphal and adult feeding on macadamia nuts often results in spotting or pitting of the kernels and premature abscission. Soft and spongy tissue under otherwise intact epidermis results when the stink bug feeds on vegetable tissue.

Pelican.&x28;Pelecanus conspicillatus&x29

Despite the fact that pelicans are omnivorous birds, pelicans mainly feed on fish, crustaceans such as prawns and crabs, small species of turtle and squid. The pelican uses it's beak pouch to scoop a mouth-full of water up and then strains the water out of it's beak leaving the food (such as fish) behind for the pelican to eat. Sumatran Tiger.

Sumatran tigers are the smallest surviving tiger subspecies and are distinguished by heavy black stripes on their orange coats. They are protected by law in Indonesia, with tough provisions for jail time and steep fines. But despite increased efforts in tiger conservation—including law enforcement and antipoaching capacity—a substantial market remains in Sumatra and the rest of Asia for tiger parts and products. Sumatran tigers are losing their habitat and prey fast, and poaching shows no sign of decline. Kea on a chain.

Named by Maori for the sound of its call, the kea (Nestor notabilis) is endemic to the Southern Alps of New Zealand and is the world’s only mountain parrot. These sociable and highly intelligent birds are well adapted to their harsh environment. Unfortunately, the traits that kea developed for survival, their curiosity and omnivorous appetite, have created conflict with humans over the last 150 years. Persecution and predation have sorely depleted numbers and, with only a few thousand birds remaining, the kea is a Nationally Endangered species. Today, the last of Indonesia’s tigers—now less than 400—are holding on for survival in the remaining patches of forests on the island of Sumatra. Accelerating deforestation and rampant poaching mean this noble creature could end up like its extinct Javan and Balinese relatives. Kea wing colours.

As kea fly overhead, they show flashes of the bright red and orange under their wings. Seen from above, their colours are duller – probably to avoid attracting the attention of birds of prey. The kea’s topside is mainly green with some brown, yellow and red, and blue-green on the outer wings. Juveniles have a yellow cere (fleshy pad above the bill) and eye-rings, both of which are grey in adults. Males weigh around 1 kilogram and females 800 grams. Like all parrots, they have two toes pointing forward and two back. As kea fly overhead, they show flashes of the bright red and orange under their wings. The Paper Kite Butterfly only has two rather common colors, black and white, but is still an eye catching beauty. The way the light shines through the wings is just amazing, and if there are other colors around it looks a bit like stained glass.
