The Shields Daily News for 18 December 1915 reports:

â€œSOLDIER CHARGED WITH THEFT AT NORTH SHIELDS.

At North Shields today, Thomas Henry Miller (24), a soldier, of Walsall Street Court, West Bromwich, was brought up on remand, charged with having stolen on the 22nd November, from the North Shields railway station, a brown leather kit bag and contents, valued at Â£3 19s 6d, the property of Lieut. Traill of the 3rd Batt. Duke of Wellingtonâ€™s Regiment, stationed at the King Edward Schools. The case was fully gone into yesterday but the sentence was postponed for the purpose of making enquiries about the defendantâ€™s character. An officer gave the defendant a good character and said he had nothing against him. The defendant was bound over for 6 months in the sum of Â£5.â€

These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesnâ€™t record the details of each prisonerâ€™s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest.

In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the â€˜Shields Daily Newsâ€™ looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot.

Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time.

Portugal, Schist Villages

The Schist Villages consist of 24 villages spread over in the Central Region of Portugal in an area of immense beauty and offers endless possibilities for recreation. The houses are mixed up in the landscape dark-colored shale. Some are abandoned, others should be recovered as, where traditions and materials were kept. These buildings are rough but beautiful at the same time before their architectural simplicity, where the shale is invariably used in walls and slate roofs. Generally buildings are accompanying the slope of the land and as such, have two floors. The store, on ground floor was meant for animals and housed upstairs to the owners. The little doors and tiny windows helped in the task because of the limited size of these openings let heat escape to guess the animals. How man and nature were one, some thick walls can hide inside a rock, which significantly reduces the usable area. Because they are all built very close together, the houses choked the streets, making them so narrow that not allowed for the passage of a bullock cart. Moreover, it is estimated that some of these paths have no more than a meter wide, forcing everything to be transported on their backs. The clay that served as the insulator and the stones with which to do the walls. Burundian troops serving with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) stand during a patrol near the village of Modmoday approx. 40km east of the central Somali town of Baidoa. The Burundians, together with forces of the Somali National Army (SNA) have been mounting 'snap' foot patrols in villages and areas to the east of Baidoa where Al Qaeda-affiliated extremist group Al Shabaab mount attacks against local herdsmen, villages and travelers along the busy Baidoa-Mogadishu road.
