The return walk to the carpark is via the glacier access road taking 15 minutes. The track starts on a river fan covered with 40-year-old shrub forest. Peters Pool viewpoint is about 10 minutes into the walk. Peters Pool is a kettle lake formed by melting buried ice about 1800 AD. The Franz Josef Glacier offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience a dynamic glacial environment, in a temperate environment, while being within easy driving and walking distance from the main highway.
