The Colosseum was built in the 70s AD and was the largest amphitheatre built during the Roman Empire. Capable of seating 70,000 spectators, the amphitheatre was used until 524 when a series of earthquakes severely damaged the structure. Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, it was used for gladiatorial combat until Christianity slowly ended this form of entertainment
