Chateau St-Marie, Lausanne, CH

Saint Marie Castle was build between 1397 and 1427 as a massive brick and sandstone palace for the bishops of Lausanne. When they were overthrown, the chateau became the residence of new overlords, the bailiffs of Bern. The fight for the independence of Lausanne and Vaud canton was led by Jean Davel, who was killed in 1723. His memorial stands now in front of the castle, used today as the seat of the cantonal authorities of Vaud.
