Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit, 1918

On August 19, 1918, the first meeting of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit was held in the ballroom of the home of Ben Thompson. Katherine Thompson (Mrs. Ben Thompson) was the chairman of the unit. The group met each week on Tuesday afternoons. With an average attendance of thirteen, the unit produced hospital shirts, comfort bags, pillowcases, and towels for the war relief effort. At the end of World War I, the women of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit decided to continue meeting to discuss the needs and general welfare of the community. The group continued to meet under their new name, the Norwester Women's Club. The first meeting of the Norwester Women's Club was held on March 28, 1919, at which time Mrs. Frank Rogers was elected their president.
