O Neill s Bicycles. EXPLORED 187

This group of workers are proud of their trade and appear happy to pose for Mr. Mason! Lucania bicycles were manufactured by John O’Neill at the Lucania works in South King Street, Dublin. An advertisement for the Lucania in a 1911 edition of Sinn Féin carried the information also that the company had won a contract to supply the Post Office with 400 delivery bicycles. Please note the advertisement posted below the logo in Irish was created by the Irish Industrial Development Association (IIDA), which I presume was a forerunner of today's IDA. Mr O'Neill's Lucania bicycles seem to have been more durable than the others on sale in Dublin but still only captured a small percentage of the market. O'Neill was an interesting man, industrialist and politician, see here Collection: The Mason Photographic Collection Date: 1907 - 1910 NLI Ref: M56/47 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie
